MP backs campaign to help carers

A CAMPAIGN to provide more help for carers – people who look after sick or disabled relatives or friends – to enter work or education has received backing from a local MP.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones has joined forces with shop workers’ union Usdaw, who are at the forefront of campaign.
She welcomed the Carers’ Review, which includes £150 million funding for more respite care and short breaks for carers, and a commitment that they will not be forced into hardship by their caring role.
The MP met working carers when they visited Parliament recently to attend an Usdaw meeting.
She said: “I was delighted to meet some of the hard working carers who do such a vital job and show such tremendous dedication.
“I will give them as much support as I can. That is why I am working with Ministers to ensure that carers receive more financial support and that the benefits system does not prevent carers from entering paid employment or full-time education.”
She said she thought the Carers Allowance should be increased and extended to people who earn up to £250 a week – rather than the £95 at present.
John Hannett, general secretary of Usdaw and a member of the Government’s Standing Commission for Carers, welcomed her support.
He said: “I am delighted to have the support of Helen Jones who has been at the forefront of campaigns promoting carers over many years.”
