AN 18-year-old member of Warrington Rowing Club has been selected for the Great Britain junior squad to compete in the World Junior Rowing Championships.
Liv Oakes has been awarded a place in a double scull after months of attending selection trials and training camps.
It is a particularly impressive achievement as she has achieved her goal during her last year at Lymm High School at the same time as working on her final A-Level exams.
Liv started rowing in her first year at Lymm through Project Oarsome which was itself in the first year of a programme linking the school with Warrington Rowing Club.
Showing outstanding promise from the very start at local and regional regattas, Liv progressed steadily and won her first National Schools’ gold medal in the double sculls when she was 15. A year later she became 2006 National Schools’ single sculling champion and was selected for the GB squad for the European event the ‘Coupe de la Jeunesse’ as a reserve. She went to the Coupe again in 2007 – this time as a crew member – and won two gold medals in a quadruple scull.
Liv, from Grappenhall, is thrilled with her success and is now getting ready to go to full-time training camp until the World Junior Rowing Championships regatta at Linz in Austria on July 21- 27.
Richard Sinnott, Liv’s coach at Warrington Rowing Club said: “I am delighted for Liv. She has been a joy to work with since the first day she got into a boat. As a coach it is rare to have the opportunity to work with an athlete who is as talented as Liv.
“I have been very lucky over the years to have worked with a small number of international standard rowers and Liv has been one of the best and probably the most complete all round athlete. “
