THE largest disability event in Europe is being launched in Golden Square, Warrington, on Saturday (June 28).
Warrington’s annual Disability Awareness event is being kicked off between 11am and 5pm with entertainment provided by disabled artists, singers and dancers, a gospel choir and a samba band.
The Mayor of Warrington Coun Graham Welborn will visit at 1pm and there will be visitors from Warrington’s twin town Hilden in Germany.
The launch is part of a week of events culminating in the popular Disability Awareness Day in Walton Gardens on Sunday July 6. More than 500 exhibitors will take part and it is expected that 30,000 people will attend.
During the week there will be nine workshop-style events including sessions on children and young people, mental health, carers and employment.
Shadow Minister for Disabled People Mark Harper MP will be visiting the town on Friday July 4 as guest of Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Warrington South David Mowat.
Meanwhile volunteers who give up a week of their lives to run the event will be supported by 60 volunteers on Saturday and Sunday from Thorn Cross Young Offenders Institute, the Lions, Rotary and Sea Cadets.
Visitors and exhibitors from all over the North West will attend the event and it is seen as being a major boost to tourism in the town.
One of the highlights will be the launch of the world’s lightest wheelchair weighing just 6.3 kilogram by North West based Future Wheelchairs.
The main sponsor of the event will be the Warrington-based North West Development Agency, supported by Warrington businesses, Warrington Borough Council and Warrington Primary Care Trust. Further details are available by contacting Warrington Disability Partnership on 240064 or by visiting the website www.disabilityawarenessday.org.uk
Parking at the site is expected to be at a premium and where possible visitors are asked to use the free and accessible Park and Ride service at the old Greenall’s site in Loushers Lane. Buses will run every 10 minutes on the Sunday.
