Prime Minister meets Warrington volunteer

A WARRINGTON volunteer has taken his charity straight to number 10 by attending a special ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Secretary of Warrington Hospital’s Radio General, Keith Inman, was invited to the event by Helen Southworth after being nominated by hospital chief executive Catherine Beardshaw.
The event was to mark the anniversary of 60 years of the NHS and Keith was in attendance to represent the voluntary section of the service.
Keith was given a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament and then taken across to the famous door of number 10.
But that was not all for the man who has been part of the Radio General team for 34, as he even managed to get a quick word with Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who revealed he had been a listener to the station himself during a short stay in the hospital.
Keith said: “It was a great day and wonderful to get the chance to see behind the scenes down there. There were around 50 volunteers invited from hospitals, hospices and other organisations and we all got the chance to chat with the Prime Minister. I think he appreciates the role of hospital radio from what he said which was great to hear. It’s really important that volunteers get recognition as they play a key role in hospitals up and down the country and I was honoured to represent the town’s hospital at the reception.”
Radio General is a voluntary organisation and registered charity that provides broadcasts for the patients of Warrington Hospital.
Initially began in 1953 with regular rugby commentaries and the request shows started in 1957 before Radio General was formed in 1976 to bring together the different areas of broadcasting.
Now the station broadcasts 24 hours a day with music, news, sports updates and chat shows.
