Kerbside recycling plans unveiled

MORE details have been released of the new kerbside recycling scheme to be introduced in Warrington later this year.
Borough council chiefs are convinced the scheme will make it easier for residents to recycle and should result in an increase in the amount of waste recycled.
A fortnightly collection will be rolled out to all households in the borough to replace the existing five-weekly blue bin collection service.
All recyclable items, such as plastic bottles, cans, card and envelopes will be included in the new initiative.
Warrington’s current recycling rate is 32 per cent and the council hopes the new service will help them reach their 40 per cent target by 2010.
It may not be all good news for flats, apartments and hard to reach areas however, as alternative arrangements will have to be made.
The new kerbside collection scheme will come into force in September.
Executive member for Environmental Services, Alan Litton, said: “We have to reduce the amount of waste we are sending to landfill and it is the responsibility of the council and residents to achieve this together.
“We received strong support for this improved service when we consulted with residents, in particular through the budget consultations at the end of last year. It was decided that this was the best way to enable our residents to boost our recycling rate.
“Warrington’s recycling rate has steadily increased thanks to residents getting on-board with recycling schemes. This new kerbside collection service is just one way we can increase this figure and hit our target of 40 per cent by 2010.”
