A 70-year-old man was struck on the head with a pickaxe while his terrified wife looked on during a vicious robbery at Warrington.
The offenders stole the couple’s car after the attack on the car park at the B&Q store in Newton Road, Winwick.
Police are now seeking the car – a silver Vauxhall Vectra registered number DY05XBG – and another car believed to have been involved in the incident.
The victim and his 67-year-old wife, from St Helens, were on the car park when they were approached by two masked men, one brandishing the pickaxe. They demanded the car keys and struck the elderly man on the head with the pickaxe knocking him to the ground.
They then drove off in the car, towards Newton Road.
Police believe they may have been driven to the car park by a third man driving a dark coloured hatchback, possibly a Vauxhall Astra, registered number DYD05XVG.
The elderly woman was unhurt in the robbery but was left badly shaken. Her husband was taken to Warrington Hospital for treatment to a head wound. He was later allowed home.
Anyone who witnessed the attack yesterday (Sunday) at about 3pm or who saw the offenders on the car park prior to the attack is asked to call DC Darren Wright on 01244 613831 or call the confidential Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
