Pupils warned of drugs danger

YOUNGSTERS in Warrington are being told about the realistic dangers of becoming involved in drugs, thanks to a new initiative being run by Cheshire Police.
School children at William Beamont High School will benefit from talks being delivered by PC Nicola Lewis and PC Jeff Mather.
The talks will be aimed at year eight children from the school and will look at all the possible dangers of becoming involved in drugs.
This event coincides with national Tackling Drugs Week, a Government run initiative to promote the good work that all the police forces across the country are doing to tackle drug problems.
Students will also be given the chance to take advantage of interactive drug boxes, touch-screen computers that contain a wealth of information on drugs and allow them to take part in quizzes.
PC Lewis commented: “Part of our work with local schools is to highlight the issue of drugs. We regularly visit schools to talk to pupils about the issue and to make young people think seriously about the consequences of substance abuse.
“But we do not just talk to the children we give them the chance to talk to us and to ask questions.
“The interactive quiz is a great way to get them focused on the subject and to delve deeper into the issue. Only by talking about it with young people can we fully understand what they think about the issue.
“Previous talks that we have done at other schools have been really successful and the students have been very positive about it. They appreciate us taking the time to talk to them about such an important issue.”
Officers will be in school Friday (May 23) at 11.30am.
