Storm over 9,000 bird chicken farm

PLANS for a free range egg production unit for 9,000 hens close to a village centre has caused a storm of protest.
More than 70 residents of Croft, near Warrington, have lodged objections to the scheme at Springfield House Farm, in Spring Lane, Croft.
In addition, Croft Parish Council has condemned the development for its “totally inappropriate industrial scale” in a Green Belt area.
The scheme is due to be considered by the borough council’s development control committee on Thursday, May 22.
Planning chiefs have turned down the proposal once, on the grounds of insufficient information to justify a mobile home for an agricultural worker nor ease fears of noise or smells.
But extra information has now been provided – and planning officers are recommending the scheme be approved.
The site is currently farm land, adjoining the M62 motorway and objectors claim this could cause problems in the event of an outbreak of avian flu.
They say a control zone of 1km would be necessary – which would include the motorway.
There are also fears of noise, smells, flies and visual damage to the Green Belt.
Residents say the application is essentially no different to the earlier one which was refused.
The development would be a “large and unsightly blemish on the landscape”, residents claim.
