We'll dump our bins at Town Hall

ANGRY residents have threatened to dump rubbish at the Town Hall and stop paying council tax after waiting four weeks for their black wheelie bins to be emptied.
Residents of Mayfield Road, Grappenhall, Warrington had to wait even longer for their recycling bins to be emptied – six weeks for the green bins and five week for the blue waste paper bins.
In the end they only got their bins emptied by dragging them to the end of an alleyway to an agreed “collection point.”
But some residents are elderly or disabled and cannot move the bins themselves.
Now local councillor Mike Biggin has taken up the residents’ case.
He said: “The problem is illegal parking. These residents have every right to complain.
“I have contacted the relevant departments at the borough council and the police. They are supposed to be going to sort out the illegal parking.”
The problems stem from the fact that refuse collection vehicles can’t negotiate a turn into an alley at the rear of houses in Mayfield Road because of parked vehicles.
Residents claim the un-emptied bins have caused smell problems during recent hot weather.
Resident Jo Rutter said: “My husband Steve actually moved everyone’s bin to the top of the road so they had no excuse. He even had to pay for our bin to emptied privately because it was that full.
“We have rung the council on a number of occasions and the response has been poor.”
Mother and daughter Beryl and Christine Anderton, who are both disabled, say they rely on “good neighbours” to move their bins for them.
Christine said: “We are lucky because we have good neighbours. But after four weeks of them not being emptied it has become a bit much. There is only so much you can take.”
A meeting between Coun Biggin, residents and council officers has decided the collection team would try and reach the bins from the other end of the road.
Coun Biggin said: “We will find a solution to this. The meeting was very positive and I think we could have cracked it.”

I may be wrong but I’ve heard talk of local independent councils because so very often its not until when the local residents scream and shout that anything gets done when actually things like this shouldn’t have to be fought for at all. I’d certainly be up for that.

  2. I agree with Geoff Settle on this, the council is being held responsible, but what about the owners of the illegally parked cars? Maybe the local residents should find out where they live and dump the rubbish in their front gardens!
