RESIDENTS in Warrington are being urged to tell police what they think about the binge drinking problems across the town.
Cheshire Police are desperate to hear the views of the town’s residents as they attempt to stem the rising tide of alcohol related crimes.
Anyone can take part in the “Big Drink Debate” by filling out an online questionnaire specifically designed to help the police operation of ArcAngel initiative, which aims to cut levels of drinking on the streets.
During the first three months of the year, a third of incidents reported to police involved alcohol, 44 per cent of which related to incidents involving young people.
The North West region has the biggest drink problem in the country with a third of adults and a quarter of youngsters drinking at hazardous or harmful levels.
Appearing on the BBC’s politics show, Cheshire’s Assistant Chief Constable, Gary Shewan, said: “This survey is gathering information that will provide all forces in the North West with a clearer picture of people’s drinking habits.
“We need to understand why there is a section of society that feels it is acceptable to drink to excess when their behaviour is intimidating and often offensive or violent. We all have the right to enjoy a social drink without being fearful of bullying, loutish and violent behaviour induced by alcohol.”
In Cheshire, Halton and Warrington the ArcAngel approach to tackling alcohol related crime and disorder has begun to set acceptable standards around the purchase and sale of alcohol.
Mr Shewan added: “One of our roles in local communities is to enforce the licensing laws and react to incidents where public safety is an issue, but we cannot change the drinking culture adopted by society on our own.
“We need to encourage all members of society to take responsibility for educating our young people in adopting socially acceptable drinking habits. I want young peoples’ drinking behaviour to be influenced by their elders who should be drinking sensibly to set the social standards.
Everyone of us needs to lead by example in drinking alcohol socially in a responsible way that will then send a clear message to our young people that this is the acceptable way to enjoy alcohol.”
