Traffic calming at blackspot junction

WARRINGTON Borough Council is to introduce new traffic calming measures at one of the town’s most controversial junctions after being inundated with complaints from motorists and residents.
Ward councillors, local businesses and residents have sent letters to town hall chiefs requesting a resolution to the traffic problems at the Westbrook Crescent junction with Cromwell Avenue.
As reported by Warrington-Worldwide on May 2, the council is set to widen the road on the north bound carriageway of Cromwell Avenue, create a bus lay-by on the south side of Westbrook Crescent, add a signal controlled crossing at Ladywood Road, monitor the junction with CCTV and change the sequence of lights.
Extra measures, including diversion signs to other routes and extended green-light time, will be introduced during the summer to cope with the additional traffic from Gulliver’s World.
Local supermarket Asda Westbrook have been consulted by council officers, who say the changes will benefit them by increasing car capacity, improving pedestrian access, a better junction to handle volumes of traffic and a more reliable journey time for travellers.
It is anticipated that the changes will be implemented during the coming months, and further information will be available from the council’s website www.warrington.gov.uk later in the month.
