A FAMILY of five were rescued from a smoke-filled house early today after fire broke out in a ground floor utility room.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus carried or led a husband and wife and three children, aged two to four, to safety from the end-terraced house in Osprey Close, Orford, Warrington.
The father was rescued from the stairs, two children and the mother – who was pregnant – from the top of the stairs and a two-year-old girl from a front bedroom.
Fire chiefs said no smoke detectors were fitted in the house and the alarm was raised by a neighbour. The cause of the blaze was a washing machine/tumble drier which had been left on when the family went to bed.
A spokesman said: “The lessons to be learned from this are that smoke detectors should be fitted and electrical appliances should not be left on overnight.
“This family are very lucky to have escaped alive.”
A hosereel jet was used to extinguish the fire but by that time extensive damage had been caused in the utility room and the entire house was blackened by smoke.
The family went to stay with relatives until damage can be assessed.
