Fiona will hike for cancer charity

A FUNDRAISER from Lymm is hoping to be fighting fit when she embarks on a 20-mile walk along the Anglesey coastal path in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Fiona MacInnes decided to take part in the walk after her mum, Betty, was treated and cared for by Macmillan nurses when she was diagnosed with skin cancer 13 years ago.
In preparation for the walk, Fiona will be taking part in the Lymm based Cheshire Trail as part of the charity’s Walk Wonders event.
She said: “When my mum was diagnosed, it was devastating not just for me but for the whole family, and so towards the end, it was important that mum was able to stay at home with us and within familiar surroundings. The Macmillan nurses were fantastic in coming out to visit and care for my mum at home, making this wish possible.
“It was important for my mum to be able to talk to someone other than her family. Somehow it was easier to tell someone else who wasn’t so emotionally involved how she was really feeling, and the nurses took time to listen and give the emotional support that she needed.”
Fiona has managed to persuade a number of friends from the Hook and Jab gym in Warrington to join her on the walk, as members of the gym had been affected by cancer in some way.
She added: “Walking is a great way to get out in the fresh air and raise money for a charity…Walking along the Anglesey Coastal Path will be our way of supporting people affected by cancer, so if we can in any way encourage others to walk for Macmillan, we will be extremely happy.”
Community Fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support, Aimee Scally said: “One in three of us will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in our lives, and cancer incidence is set to triple by 2025. Macmillan is 99 per cent funded by voluntary donations and has to raise millions each year to provide medical, emotional, financial and practical support for people living with cancer. The route is lovely to walk; it’s really great to feel like part of a team, and to see those green T-shirts covering the trail. If anybody is interested then please call 0845 673 0706 to register.”
Anyone interested in sponsoring Fiona can do so by contacting the gym on 01925 637 335.
