Students in court battle

LAW students from Priestley College pitted their wits against other colleges from across Warrington in a mock trial competition at the town’s magistrate court.
The group joined others from Warrington Collegiate, Lymm sixth form and Barrowhall College, to compete in the mock trial.
Ultimately it was the group from the Loushers Lane campus who came out on top, with student George Williams, also from Priestley, being named as star performer on the day.
The trial involved all aspects of typical court-room proceedings, with a specially written Section 47 Actual Bodily Harm case being the focus of the event.
Students from Priestley spent a number of weeks preparing for the trial, something that George believes paid dividends.
He said: “The competition was exciting and enthralling. There were a good few nerves about before we started but those soon went away and we were very proud that the chief magistrate thought we showed good promise.”
Law tutor at Priestley, Christian Oliver, said: “The competition is of great benefit to the students, giving them insight into the legal profession, and most of the team are now hoping to progress on to a law degree. The competition was hard fought but played out in a great spirit and I am very proud of our students who were all a credit to Priestley College.”
