Parish to pay for play scheme

STOCKTON Heath Parish Council has decided to go it alone and fund a summer play scheme even though the borough council is unable to pay for it.
Members are to look for sponsorship for the scheme, but will fund the two week scheme at a cost of £1,300 if it is unable to attract funds.
Coun Celia Jordan made the suggestion: “Why not seek sponsorship against this cost?” Coun Tudor Pole suggested the contractors building the new school may want to help.
At the previous parish council meeting members heard the borough council no longer had a budget for play schemes, The cost of running a scheme with two play leaders would be £500 plus rent.
Members heard the cost of hiring St Thomas’ Church Hall would be £150 per week for a two hour play scheme each day.
The Village Committee considered plans and agreed to fund a two-week scheme. It agreed an entrance fee of £1 per child (previously 50p) to help offset costs.
Coun Wendy Emsley said: “If each child has to pay £1 each time they put a foot through the door every day, I consider this a lot, especially for families who have more than one child.
