Arsonist set fire to mum's house

A MAN showed “a complete disregard” for his mother’s life when he set their home on fire after trying to burn his medication in a bedroom bin.
Ian Mullin, 35, from Hood Lane, Great Sankey, Warrington, pleaded guilty to arson at Warrington Crown Court and was jailed for three years.
Joanne Clark, prosecuting, said Mullin lived at home with his 66-year-old mother and went to bed shortly after her on January 3 after drinking two cans of lager.
He awoke her at around 12.30am to tell her the house was on fire and the fire brigade was on its way.
Mullin then bizarrely got back into his bed, in the room where the fire was, and tried to go back to sleep, despite his mother screaming at him to get out.
Firefighters had to carry him out of the house in his sleeping bag and he later claimed he had started the fire because he wanted to get rid of the pills he was taking as they weren’t working.
David Rose, defending, said Mullin had a problem with alcohol and had tried to take his own life on several previous occasions.
His problems stemmed from when he was attacked as a security guard, bundled into his own vehicle and left by a rubbish dump.
Judge Nicholas Woodward told Mullin: “You pleaded guilty to a serious charge of arson and were reckless with regard to the life of your 66-year-old mother.”
