Site cabins will house homeless

SITE cabins providing basic sleeping, washing and cooking facilities look set to be used to provide accommodation for homeless people at Warrington.
Ten “on-site sleepers” will be erected on land near the existing Alder Lodge hostel for the homeless at Orford, if planners give the go-ahead.
The borough council believes the units will provide an innovative temporary solution to the problem of high levels of homelessness in the town, giving housing chiefs time to find permanent premises.
If a trial period of three months proves successful, the units, each of which can sleep two people, could remain on the site for three years.
They will link with existing homeless accommodation at Alder Lodge and should relieve some of the pressure on the hostel until a permanent solution can be sought.
An eight-strong team will staff the cabins 24 hours a day and residents will be allowed to stay for up to six weeks.
Nearby residents have objected on the grounds of the unsightly appearance of the cabins and the possibility of increased crime. They are also concerned because of existing plans for a medical centre on the site.
But planning officers are recommending the scheme be approved.
