THE three thugs who killed
Warrington father-of-three Garry Newlove are today starting jail
sentences ranging from 17 to 12 years.
All three received life sentences when they appeared before Judge Andrew Smith at Chester Crown Court.
Adam Swellings, 19, of Meredith Street, Crewe was jailed for a minimum
of 17-years; Stephen Sorton, 17, of Honister Street, Warrington,
received a minimum of 15 years; and Jordan Cunliffe, 16, formerly of
Rowland Close, Warrington, was jailed for a minimum of 12 years.
They had all been convicted of murder last month.
Judge Smith told the trio they had all regarded drunken aggression as
“part of the night’s entertainment” when they went out in Warrington
last August.
They attacked Mr Newlove, of Padgate, simply because he had the courage
to remonstrate with them after his wife’s car had been vandalised,
along with property owned by a neighbour.
The court had heard Mr Newlove was “kicked like a football” and suffered massive head injuries.
He died two days later in hospital.
After the three were convicted in January it emerged that Swellings had
been released from custody for an earlier assault only hours before the
attack on Mr Newlove.
He was freed on bail on condition he stayed away from Warrington but he
never actually left the town. Instead he joined Sorton and Cunliffe and
started drinking and smoking cannabis.
.
The vicious attack on Mr Newlove was witnessed by his three daughters, who were all praised by the judge.
“They did all anyone could have done to help. Nobody who saw them
during the trial could fail to have been touched and impressed by their
simple and straightforward decency.
“Everybody in court would have understood why Garry Newlove would have been so proud of them.”
