I had this Somerset Maugham book in my library as a child, gift of an aunt. I didn’t understand it. Thanks to Edward Norton and Naomi Watts for bringing it to the wide exotic screen with authentic Chinese scenery. In the story they are English – and their accents seem to me to be standard Brit — non locale specific. I have new respect for Norton and Watts — seems they co-produced it as well.
