Wolves to ban supporters
who won’t quit smoking

by Terry Johnson

RUGBY League chiefs are to ban habitual smokers from watching games at Warrington Wolves’ Halliwell Jones Stadium.
The tough line against smoking fans follows a series of breaches of the club’s ?No Smoking? policy.
Club stewards seeking to enforce the ruling have been verbally and physically abused by a small number of fans.
Now the club says it is to invoke stadium banning orders against refuse-niks who ruin the enjoyment of non-smokers.
“We will pursue stadium banning orders against those fans who are continually smoking, in conjunction with police officers”, said a club spokesman.
The stadium became a ?no smoking environment? after 63 per cent of the 8,294 fans who returned survey forms called for cigarettes to be stubbed out.
They complained of sore throats, headaches and eye troubles resulting from passive smoking.
“With an increasing number of children attending games, the club decided to act before Government legislation at the end of 2007”, said the spokesman.
The move to bar smokers from matches comes hot on the heels of a clampdown on ?hoodies? by 35 town-centre pub managers in Warrington.
This ban is aimed at setting ?a respectable standard?.

Takeaway shop
appeal allowed

by John Hendon

A GOVERNMENT planning inspector has allowed plans for a hot food takeaway shop in Central Avenue, Orford Warrington.
Borough planners had refused permission because of fears that traffic levels and on-street parking could affect highway safety and the free flow of traffic.
But the inspector who heard the applicant?s appeal has ruled that the premises is located among shops and there is existing traffic calming which reduces the speed of traffic.
He says there is no evidence the takeaway would generate high levels of traffic and nothing to suggest that on-street parking in the area would lead to problems.
The inspector has approved the scheme, subject to the shop closing at 11pm.
A borough council spokesman said appeals against the refusal of planning consent for takeways on highways and parking grounds had repeatedly been successful.
Similar appeals in Warrington Road, Penketh, Padgate Lane and Longford Street had all proved successful.
?Future decisions relating to applications for similar forms of development should have regard to the outcome of this and the other appeals,? he added.
