Residents celebrate
?21,000 boost for park

by John Hendon

RESIDENTS are celebrating after winning a ?21,450 grant to improve St Peter?s Park, Warrington.
The money comes in the form of ?13,450 from waste recycling charity WREN and an ?8,000 contribution from Warrington Borough Council.
St Peters Area Residents & Tenants Association (SPARTA) applied for the grant and were supported in their bid by community development officer Dave Eatock and local councillors.
The park is off Battersby Lane.
SPARTA chairman Brian Thompson said: “The funding from WREN and the council has been a great help to us in making the park a better recreational facility for the whole community, and we will be working with the council to bring about further improvements in the near future.”
Coun Yvonne Fovargue added: “SPARTA are working hard to improve the local environment for residents. There is a real need for safe areas for young people to play so the grant award is most welcome. The dedication of the officers and members of SPARTA to improving the park is to be commended.”
Further improvements in the area should result from a commitment by the developers carrying out the former Rylands wire works site housing scheme to pay further improvements to the park and providing a community base for SPARTA.

Councillors to study
conservatory scheme

by staff reporter

COUNCILLORS are to visit a house at Culcheth, near Warrington before reaching a decision on an application to build a conservatory and single storey porch and extension.
Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council are objecting to the scheme in Wigshaw Lane.
The parish council says it does not object to the porch but is concerned about the conservatory on the side of an end terraced cottage.
They point out that the row of terraced houses has been designed to look like a Georgian masion and claim the conservatory will spoil the street scene.
Planning officers are recommending the scheme be approved and say it will preserve the amenities of near neighbours and the character of the area.
But members of Warrington’s development control committee decided to visit the site before making a decision.

Businesses join forces
to battle against crime

by John Hendon

BUSINESSES on Warrington?s Gemini Retail and Business Park are benefiting from an innovative forum set up to help prevent crime in the area.
The Gemini Crime Prevention and Security Forum brings together representatives from the borough council, police and the business community and their overall objective is to ensure that Gemini is a pleasant place to live, visit and work.
Set up four months ago to help businesses address crime and security issues the, forum has already resulted in positive actions being taken including:
The setting up of a fast email response system – so businesses can pass on information and alert to any issue.
Ikea has installed additional new security initiatives to help protect against theft.
Coun Jeff Richards, the borough council?s executive member for Sustainable Environment said: “Creating safe and secure environments for people and businesses to thrive in is very important and this forum is an example of how we can work with our partners and businesses to help to achieve this.”
“While it is important to continue to attract new businesses in to Warrington, we fully appreciate the value of ensuring the businesses we Have receive on going help and support.
“The forum was officially set up in November as a direct result of a study produced by Groundwork, which highlighted the crime and security issues facing businesses on Gemini Retail and Business Park.
“While it was clear criminal activity was no higher than anywhere else, Gemini businesses decided to work together to reduce and prevent crime even further.”
Police spokesman Insp Brian Heywood, said: “The creation of this forum is a significant step forward in the fight against crime. A large number of people visit the retail outlets in this part of Warrington each and every day of the week. By working in partnership with one another in this way, local businesses will reassure their customers and send out a strong message that opportunist thieves are not welcome.”

Three-storey flats
plan thrown out

by David Skentelbery

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have thrown out proposals for 16 apartments in a three-storey block ? despite being urged by their officers to approve the scheme.
Members of the borough council?s development control committee refused housebuilders Balfour Homes permission to build the apartments on land at the rear of Church Street, Warrington.
The scheme involved demolition of existing industrial buildings in a rundown condition.
But residents of the new Trinity Green housing development, backed by local councillor Yvonne Fovargue, objected on the grounds of loss of privacy and residential amenity.
They claimed the development would have an overbearing and oppressive impact on their homes and that the proposed apartments were of an inappropriate design and layout, in view of the nearness of a terrace of Grade II Listed buildings.
Officers argued that the development would preserve the character and appearance of the Church Street Conservation Area and was an acceptable distance from existing properties.
But the committee decided the scheme would have an unacceptable impact on neighbouring residents.

Gory, real-life drama
stretches the limits

by staff reporter

THEATRE company Strange Roads, has turned to the North West sadomasochist community for help with its latest production ?I Found Her Tied to My Bed?, to be staged at Warrington?s Pyramid arts centre on Saturday March 11.
Theatre censorship was abolished in 1968, but almost 40 years on there are still shows which test the limits – and this is one of them.
?I Found Her Tied To My Bed?, an American drama getting its UK premiere, is based on a particularly gory real-life story of two nurses in Ohio accused of murdering residents in a nursing home.
Based on a true story, the play focuses on the relationship between careworkers Jan and Beth. Jan will do anything to have power, notoriety and her own twisted version of love. Beth will do anything to have Jan.
Bored with their jobs at the nursing home, desperate for stimulation, they plunge themselves into a dark world of fear and torture where their exploration of danger, domination and eroticism spirals murderously out of control.
From the producers of last year’s hit “Liberations”, inspired by a true story, and fresh from its success on the Broadway Fringe, ?I Found Her Tied to My Bed? is disturbing and thought-provoking.
Produced with help from the Liverpool bondage community, the play contains strong language and scenes that some people may find disturbing.
This Friday, the Steppe Brothers play at the Pyramid. Tickets are ?12 and ?10.
