Student Mike tackles
rugby – and exams

by John Hendon

COLLEGE student Mike Cooper is like most other 17 year olds you would care to meet but with one very big difference.
The teenager from Appleton who is currently in his first year at Priestley College, Warrington is tackling AS-levels in Psychology, Law and Sport & Physical Education.
Although there’s nothing unusual about his course line-up, it is what Mike is managing to achieve in his spare time that is truly remarkable, having made a big impression at Warrington Wolves.
Mike has recently enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame in the Rugby League world having arrived on the scene from virtually nowhere.
Having played Rugby Union for his school and Rugby League with Latchford Albion the youngster then progressed onto the Wolves and in recent times has been an integral part of the u16, u18 and u21 setups.
He has recently been given a chance at senior level too and even been handed a squad shirt for the forthcoming Super League season.
Indeed Cooper was able to don his number 27 jersey for the very first time against arch rivals Widnes Vikings during the recent game in honour of former captain Mike Gregory when he was able to mix it against professionals such as Terry O’ Connor and Mark Smith.
College Rugby League coach Matt Richmond said: “It has been a great pleasure to work with Mike whenever he has been available to us. I congratulate him on his success at senior level during the recent run of pre-season friendlies and look forward to tracking him on his career path.”
