A couple of weeks ago I saw the last part of a film about Dr. Roger Bannister and his training to break the four minute mile ‘barrier’ — it was thought to be beyond human ability. I took it for an old, old movie. It could have been made in the 1950s or 60s — but then, why did Christopher Plummer look so old? Today I realized it must have been produced for the 50th anniversary of that event. The crawl at the end of the film said that two months later a New Zealand runner beat Roger’s record. Then a few months after that the New Zealander and Bannister ran a match race and Bannister won that one, and then retired from competitive running.
