Town topple league leaders again!

BATTLING Warrington Town kept their slim play off hopes alive with a stunning 2-1 victory at table topping Curzon Ashton to complete a league double.
It was Curzon’s first defeat in 14 games and only their third of the season as they collected the team of the month award prior to kick off.
Warrington started brightly and were ahead inside of two minutes, striker Tony Evans breaking the home sides offside trap only to see his shot saved by Curzon’s Spanish goalkeeper Javer Sanchez, who pushed ball to fall on to the post for the on-rushing Chris Gahgan (pictured right) to finish at the second attempt, to the delight of the large travelling support. Curzon immediately looked to get back into the game and soon saw striker Andrew Lundy head high over Richie Mottram’s cross bar. The early loss of Town’s full back Mike Grogan to injury following a bad challenge by former Town midfielder Dean Canning seemed to disrupt Warrington’s pattern of play slightly and it was the home side who went close soon after, when on rushing strike duo, Lundy and Micky Norton overran a cross by Canning, and the ball was cleared by Town. It wasn’t long before the home side finally got an equalising goal , Canning heading home a cross beyond Mottram.
Both sides came out for the second half looking for a second goal, with the home side generally having the best of the play. Curzon were first to go close, but were denied by an excellent challenge by centre back Levi Kennedy who challenged Norton who was about to pull the trigger. Norton went close again shortly afterwards, sliding in and hitting the side netting from a yard. The game began to open up with the play, Mick O’Donnell shooting from distance and Kennedy once more denying Norton with an excellent block.
Warrington were denied what appeared to be a stonewall penalty, when Tom Hardwick’s hooked cross struck the hand of defender David Birch in the box, but referee Mr Buxton waved away Town’s claims. Dave Roberts was next to go close, being denied at the far post after an excellent cross by Jimmy McCarthy. The game turned in 60 seconds late in the game, Micky Norton seeing his effort ruled out by the assistant referee, and from the resultant free kick Town went up to the other end and were awarded a penalty, when Dave Roberts’ cross was handled by defender Adam Jones.
Up stepped the cool Gahgan who blasted home the penalty (pictured top), his 21st goal of the season. Gahgan went close to a hat trick deep into the four minutes of injury time when his curling effort from outside of the box forced a fantastic flying save from Sanchez.
Warrington’s next game is tomorrow, Tuesday, kick off 7.45pm when they entertain Bootle in the Liverpool Senior Cup and return to league action next Saturday at home to Woodley Sports, kick off 3pm.

Substitute Richard Chetcuti tip toes through the Curzon defence.
