Town lift Peace Cup

WARRINGTON Town’s pioneering visit to Belfast saw them lift the inaugural Peace Cup with a resounding 7-2 victory over hosts Crewe United.
The victory followed an all round excellent team performance as Town continue to prepare for the forthcoming season.
Town started brightly and were ahead in the 2nd minute, when Rob Dutton was on hand to finish nicely at the far post after good work by Maltese U21 international Richard Chetcuti. Town continued to press forward and went close once again through livewire srikers Jimmy MCarthy and Dutton, who forced a good save from Crewe keeper Thomas Boyle.
Crewe had a half chance when Mottram cleared straight to striker Micky Tohill, whose attempted lob, was saved by a back-pedalling Mottram. It was no surprise when McCarthy made it two for Town, when he finished off after a fine jinking run. Chetcuti was next to go close when he forced another good save out of Boyle. Crewe began to get back into the game, and soon pulled a goal back when winger Kevin Cassidy was on hand to slot home after a momentary confusion between Mottram and Filipek, led to a loose ball. Crewe began to enjoy their best spell and Cassidy was once again thwarted by Mottram. Town began to re-assert their authority and went close once again through McCarthy, who saw his angled chip fall narrowly wide of the target. It was no surprise when captain Mike Tomlinson was on hand to head home from a precise Phil Hadland cross. Chetcuti went close shorlty after half time, seeing his effort rebound back to Boyle off the inside of the post.
The second half began with Town in contol and it fell to Dutton to put Town further ahead when got on the end of a Chetcuti pass to slot home.
He completed his hat trick shortly afterwards as Crewe were harshly adjuged to have fowled Gahgan and Dutton stepped up to beat Boyle and complete his first hat trick in Town colours.
Boyle was once called into action to deny McCarthy twice soon afterwards. Crewe got a goal back when striker Tohill scuffed a shot which went in off the post past a despairing Mottram. Three minutes later Town re-established their four goal lead, when Chetcuti produced a good angled drive to make the score 6-2.
Finally Chetcuti added the seventh goal with another poweful angled drive, this time past substitute goalkeeper Paddy Magee.
Town are next in action tomorrow, Tuesday, when they entertain Witton Albion, kick off 7.45pm in another pre-season friendly.
